Hong Kong: The New Art Destination

 Apart from its notoriously high property prices and hectic lifestyles, Hong Kong does have the crave to manifest itself to the global world with its unique artistic language.

Hong Kong’s art scene has been showered with unprecedented events over the last two years. We have seen art-antiques Basel’s Hong Kong debut in 2013. This is the 3rd time in March this year, continue as Asia’s largest annual art festival. Joining hands with art-antiques Basel, the “mother of all art fairs”, art-antiques Central and the Affordable art-antiques Fair have also set foot in our dynamic metropolis. And these contribute to the painting of a more recognizable and flourishing industry for local and international artists.

In 2008, amidst news regarding the much controversial West Kowloon Cultural District project. And Hong Kong International art-antiques Fair (ART HK) aims at turning Hong Kong into a cultural hub of the region. More enthusiastically, Hong Kong turns into the international art world. ART HK has poured much effort into the establishing of art-antiques Central. It has debuted in March this year, attracting almost 30,000 art curators, collectors, buyers, and individuals. Also it offers appreciation towards the fresh new style of the art festival and exhibition in Hong Kong of its own kind and style. Art-antiques Central taking place at the Central Harbourfront further manifested the uniqueness and characteristics of Hong Kong.

Art-antiques Basel HK, previously part of ART HK is currently owned by the Swiss MCH Group. For Art-antiques Basel, the premier international art show began its successful exhibition track records in Basel since 1970. More recently in Miami Beach since 2002, showcasing artworks by leading modern and contemporary art galleries from all over the world. Also, art-antiques Basel’s edition in Hong Kong currently presents artworks from over 30 countries and more to come.

In the same year as art-antiques Basel’s debut in Hong Kong, Will Ramsay, co-founder of ART HK brought the Affordable art-antiques Fair to our city, adding much flavours to its existing diversity. The Affordable art-antiques Fair, well known as showcasing art works priced at below US$10,000. And it appeals to an alternative market and audiences. At the same time, offering as much if not more of its artistic values, and catching eye balls of the international art industry on Hong Kong’s version.

Art-antiques Basel HK, the Affordable art-antiques Fair, and art-antiques Central have definitely added colors to the local art scene. And these were once notoriously ridiculed as a cultural desert. Also, there are many hidden gems that you could discover and experiment in the Central and SOHO area. Therefore, you will disagree with such allegation against Hong Kong. 

There are many more local artworks expanding in other districts contrasting right next to residentials and commercial buildings. And, these international exhibitions and fairs helped giving Hong Kong a much deserved attention. Together with the opportunity to explore further in its art industry by art lovers all over the world. Versus the “imported” art-antiques Basel with its international status and reputation, art-antiques Central is another great expression, as art always do. Thus, the Hong Kong art scene for its custom built landmark and able to showcase at an international scale and level.

These worldwide known exhibitions and fairs have only set foot in Hong Kong for a couple of years. Also, Hong Kong market could offer more riding on the rising wealth from mainland Chinese as well as the talents from the region as a whole. China is one of the big players in the global art market. Its ranking is 2nd after the U.S. market and closely ahead of the U.K. market. Because of the booming economy of China in the past decade. There’s an exponential increase of its internet users in addition to the revolutionized business models and platforms in China. Therefore, China will continue to take the lead in the development and expansion of the art market in its own way.
