Louboutin: Footwear Extraordinaire

Identified by his iconic red soles, Christine Louboutin has amassed a substantial following of shoe enthusiasts for his theatrical and whimsical designs.

His fascination with footwear emerged after a visit to the Museum of African and Oceanic Art where he came across a sign prohibiting visitors from wearing heels. Enamored with the idea of elevated shoes, he began sketching stilettoes and captivated by the romantic glamour of Moulin Rouge during his youth, designed footwear for showgirls at the age of 16. In 1982, Louboutin approached Christian Dior with a collection of his drawings and under the tutelage of Dior’s footwear designer, Charles Jourdan, honed his design prowess.

After a stint creating shoes for eminent labels such as Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent, Louboutin established his moniker brand in 1991 with the opening of his primary store in Paris. Synonymous with a subtle sex appeal, the idea behind his trademark crimson-lacquer soles was inspired from observing his assistant paint her nails a vivid red. Since the debut of Louboutin’s independent label, the Parisian shoe virtuoso has been acknowledged by nobility (Princess Caroline of Monaco was among his initial clients) and is revered by entertainers that include Madonna, Sarah Jessica Parker and Blake Lively.
