Takashi Murakami: A Work of Art

Dubbed as the Japanese counterpart of the celebrated American artist, Andy Warhol, Takashi Murakami – a graduate from the Tokyo National University – is recognized for his fusion of classical Japanese painting techniques with pop, otaku and animé. Using an aesthetic identified as “Superflat”, Murkami’s work illustrates Japanese and Western influences and spans fashion, animation, popular culture as well as fine art. In addition to establishing an art production and management firm that incubates artistic talent, he has held a number of showcases at distinguished exhibition halls including the Museum of Contemporary art-antiques in Tokyo and the Serpentine Gallery in London.

During his youth, Murakami could be found examining the mushrooms found in his garden. His work from 2003, titled an Army of Mushrooms, alludes to this childhood memory and to Takehisha Yumeji – a well-respected twentieth-century painter, poet and illustrator who at one point used the theme of mushrooms. From the painting, it has been observed that mushrooms of varying size have open or partially opened eyes that, according to Murakami, signify both eroticism and magic. This acrylic on canvas, which can be found on Luxify, has been preserved in its original condition and has been hand-signed by the creator himself.
