What Makes Chaumet Special?
Chaumet, or the House of Chaumet, as it is also known, is a French designer of fine jewelry founded in 1780. It is owned by the conglomerate LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE since 2012.
History of Chaumet
The House of Chaumet was established in 1780 by Marie-Étienne Nitot, a designer that had previously been an apprentice to Queen Marie-Antoinette’s personal jewelry-maker, Aubert. He created jewelry for the French Empire, notably for Napoleon I. Nitot created his crown and jewelry for his two marriages. After he passed away, the house was taken over by his son, François Regnault Nitot. After the dissolution of the Empire, François sold it to Jean Baptiste Fossin. When Fossin was in charge, Chaumet started to make an increasingly Renaissance-styled plethora of jewelry, a style that can be found even today in their products.
Rarity & Exclusivity of Chaumet
All their pieces of jewelry are handmade with techniques that are hundreds of years old. Moreover, it’s less likely you’ll find another jewelry house that has catered to emperors and queens. In terms of quality, you can look at a luxury watch. A Chaumet Class One, to be more precise. You can’t help but see that this was made with the best materials, hence the price. What really makes Chaumet differ from other jewelry houses is the fact that it has worked for the French Empire, which is no small thing. If Napoleon was happy with his Chaumet jewelry, you can rest assured that so will you.
