White Faced Harlequin by Sax Berlin
Fully costumed Harlequin sits before the hot swirling background looking reflective after his performance. With his ceruse coated face he is the archetypal image of our perception of the character. Berlin has masterfully created this work to represent the duality of Harlequin; outwardly calm but internally flaming with intense emotion and desire.
Sax Berlin is unique in using this natural material in this way - beautiful Italian slate. Created in the tranquil Japanese gardens and tea house which serve as his summer studio. This image could almost be a form of meditation in itself; gaze at the face and be drawn into the tranquility and depth of the Lotus Buddha. Once again Berlin has created a work that's unlike any other; although 21st Century the piece could equally be from ages past, bringing to mind the ancient temples of the East.

Gilded Lillies for the Dove of Peace
The dramatic size of this work from Berlin reflects the size of his humanity and the concerns he has for the world. In his own words "there's no need to gild the lily ..... until now. It is time for drastic measures. Someone has to do some thing for peace." Truly a piece from the very depths of this Master Artists' heart; Sax has brought all the skills of his prodigious talent to bear witness to his concerns. Highly symbolic use of Calla Lillies, symbolising honour, truth & beauty, have been gilded in pure white gold to over-emphasise the importance of the message. Marble dust creates a rock hard foundation upon which the whole premise of the painting grows and reaches out to be heard. "Sax gilds the lily and offers it to the Dove of Peace". Clothed In Light, Abraham and Sarah
This majestic double portrait Abraham and Sarah is part of a series of paintings by breaking British artist Sax Berlin. Inspired by the Bible and also by a commission to paint Isaac (2014).Abraham and Sarah are depicted in nomadic old age still wandering but awaiting the miracle of their promised son. I had no idea at the time that I was creating a standing ageing pregnant woman in the folds of the headscarf by Sarah's face... says Sax Berlin...the hand the brush the texture the canvas and the paint all know what they are doing....all I can do is step aside and watch the creation. I laid the gold and etched into the silver of the beard as though the piece was created by a contemporary artist after researching the work of Ur and Babylon This Master artist is also Shaman. He encounters the spirits of antiquity and transmits them to our modern world.Masterful work by a truly great artist. Pristine condition.Oil Painting 24 x 30 2014 Contemporary

A really exciting day out for the people going to the docks to get a behind the scenes look at an environment that s usually out of bounds. Bella, Seamstress Of The Harlequins by Sax Berlin 2016
Without their unique & colourful costumes some of the Comedie del Arte characters wouldn't be readily identifiable. Certain information could be derived from their clothing; audiences knew what members of the various social classes typically wore, and also expected certain colours to represent certain emotional states. In this bright work Berlin has given us a beautiful glimpse at another member of the Comedie's family, Bella the seamstress who labours behind the scenes to enable the performers to present themselves in full regalia. Sometimes it is the unseen, less visible characters that can be the most alluring, this portrait of Bella at work is a fine example.
Using hand ground pigments made from semi-precious stones (malachite) gives this painting a rich depth of quality that cannot be found in modern oil paints.

Blue Harleking by Sax Berlin
Blue Harleking - a beautiful piece from Berlins' Harleking series. This mesmerising painting is cooler and more sculptural in its construct. The sculptural quality & cooler palette draws one to delve deep into the heart of this Harleking to try and unravel the enigmatic riddle of consciousness that lies within. Take what you will from the Blue Harlequin, every interpretation is individual and personal, but no matter what you see it is obvious that Sax Berlin is a brilliant, timeless exponent of his craft.

Saffron Buddha by Sax Berlin
The Saffron Buddha was created using the proportions of Tibetan sacred geometry. It reflects Sax Berlin's studies in icon painting from his beginning in Kathmandu in the early 1970's and 20 years of experience in their portrayal. It is possible to look into this image and see reflections of the images found in the Ajanta caves in India. Berlin is faithful to the iconography but gives this work his unique inspiration. Comments from leading exponents of the genre eloquently express the impact of the work; the President of the Asia Society wrote that his "work is beautiful" and Prof. Bernard Faure of the Asia Studies Department at Columbia University wrote that his "icons really do have a life of their own".
Sax Berlin is creating the Great 108 Collection of representations of Buddha. The number 108 has sacred meaning for followers of the Buddhist faith. For example there are 108 beads on a Buddhist Mala (rosary) and there are apparently 108 temptations to be avoided, in Japan a temple bell or gong will ring 108 times to welcome the new year.
Pristine condition. 30" x 18" Hand ground pigments on canvas
