Classic Goyard steamer trunk, with original label on the interior canvas.
Goyard, established in 1792, is the oldest Parisian trunk maker, still in business today. It has been passed down from generation to generation under the successive names of Martin, Morel and finally Goyard. It was Francois Goyard (1860 - 1937) who made trunk making, box making and packing the family's trade when he purchased Maison Morel, purveyor to Her Royal Highness the Duchesse de Berry. Edmond Goyard (1860 - 1937) expanded the business and Robert Goyard (1893 - 1979), a man about town, was the face of the business during the booming post war years. Goyard was a rival to the better-known Louis Vuitton and made fewer pieces, hence they are harder to find today. Our trunk is exceptional for both the quality of the craftsmanship and the process of manufacture, combining natural tan leather with a green-painted canvas. The exotic hotel labels makes this piece a rare commodity, and an evocation of the life of the smart-set in the early 20th century.
