HISTORY OF THE DODGE DART
For 1960 the Chrysler Corporation was looking to re-establish its branding due to slowing sales in the DeSoto division. Plymouth was rebranded as more of a mid-level luxury car with their now-famous "suddenly it's 1960" campaign while the new Dodge models were pushed as an entry-level economy Mopar. The new Dart was designed by Virgil Exner and featured a low silhouette with long sculpted lines particularly in the rear fenders, a design that Dodge billed as "providing an expression of fleetness and power." The Dart was offered with three levels of trim; these included the Seneca, mid-range Pioneer, and the premium Phoenix, which was especially stylish in its pillarless 4-door hardtop configuration. The Dart was a big success for Chrysler and gave Ford and Chevrolet some real competition. Their success is most likely partially due to a sales push of their sponsorship of the Lawrence Welk Show in October 1959.
