It is often said that any car enthusiast should own at least one Alfa Romeo in their life. Alfa Romeos have a certain quality about them that can be difficult to explain, but once you get behind the wheel, it all becomes clear. Lively handling, jewel-like twin-cam engines and bodies designed by the greatest Italian carrozzeria all add up to create cars that are unmatched for sheer driving joy – from the most basic four-door sedan up to a two-seat sports car. The Duetto spider was based on the highly successful 105-series chassis that served as the basis of the Giulia and Giulietta coupes and sedans. Initially offered with a 1600cc version of the famous twin cam, it was later updated to the delectable 1750 engine; regarded as the best Alfa Romeo engine of the period. While fairly conventional, the chassis was very well sorted thanks to the well-located rear axle and independent front suspension. The Duetto was built on a strong unibody platform, and came standard with disc brakes, and a 5-speed manual transmission. The beautiful bodywork was penned at Pininfarina. It was the last project that the company’s founder, Battista “Pinin” Farina had a personal hand in. The beautiful design is characterized by minimal chrome, distinctly sculptured body sides and that signature tapering, rounded tail. This is the purest expression of the Alfa Spider, and the most desirable of all models in the 27 year production run.

This 1967 Spider Duetto has been nicely restored with an emphasis on drivability and enjoyment. Bright white paint over black upholstery and black top lend it a pleasing and crisp look. Panel fit and bodywork are very good, with straight and well-presented brightwork, mostly in very nice original condition. Duetto interiors have a sparse but pleasant feel to them, and this one has been very nicely restored with newer upholstery and carpet. Black seats, door panels and carpet are offset by very good bright trim and a painted dash panel. It is nicely detailed with a period correct radio and seatbelts. The original instruments are in good order and look great set against the body-color dash. This example has been mechanically sorted and is ready to be enjoyed on the road, as any Alfa should, of course. The 1750 engine is considered by Alfisti to be the very best of the era, noted for its flexible nature and sweet soundtrack. This example is fed through a pair of reliable Weber DCOE carburetors with a twin-tip exhaust providing a bit of symphonic expression. The correct original steel wheels ride on a nice set of Firestone radial tires and feature original hub caps in great condition. Like all Duettos, the slick 5-speed manual transmission puts power down through the rear axle, that extra gear a welcome addition for highway cruising. As stylish little roadsters go, it is hard to top the Alfa Romeo Duetto for its perfect combination of sheer driving pleasure and timeless good looks. This example is certain to please on all fronts.
