HISTORY OF THE FERRARI TESTAROSSA
The Ferrari Testarossa was developed beginning in the late 1970's as a successor to the BB model. While Ferrari originally intended to give the 512BBi a subtle facelift, it soon became apparent that the model would no longer meet emission requirements in the U.S. and a completely new model needed to be developed. Ferrari turned to the research team at Pininfarina to design the new car. Heading the project was Leonardo Fioravanti, who previously designed the P5, P6 and the 365 GTB/4 "Daytona." The name "Testarossa" (translated as "red head") was named after a series of 1950's racing cars that had red painted camshaft covers, a feature that Ferrari's new Testarossa would inherit. The finished car was unveiled to the public during the 1984 Paris Motor Show at the famed Lido nightclub. With a 390 horsepower 5.0 liter flat-12 engine, the Testarossa was good for a 0-60 mph time of 5 seconds and pushed speeds of 180 mph. Its legendary performance and iconic Pininfarina lines spoke to a generation of enthusiasts, in part to making numerous appearances across all forms of media, including a starring role in the popular television show "Miami Vice" starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas.
