**Edo period 18th-19th century, Japan**

**14 cm long**

**5.51 inches long**

The rectangular box with a cut away overhanging cover decorated in gold and silver and black hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, shishiai-takamaki-e and kirikane and carved red lacquer on a hirame ground. The scene depicts deer in a wooded landscape beside a river and small waterfall with maples and crimson glory vines, the cover with monkeys in a similar landscape playing in wisteria. The interior with a dense nashiji ground.
