At the time, Auto-Union was a reputed manufacturer of different types of vehicles, from motorcycle to buses, distributing their products under the DKW brand. Auto-Union then swore by the two-stroke engine, whose demand was declining. Also, in 1963, the manufacturer presented the F102, equipped with the famous engine, against the warning of Daimler, judging this technology obsolete. It must be said that at that time, the Daimler engineers, under the leadership of the talented Ludwig Kraus, were working on a model with a four-stroke engine to replace the failed two-stroke version. The engineers therefore developed a four-cylinder in-line engine with 1.7 litre displacement, with above-average fuel compression. This new engine was installed in the Mercedes W119 prototype. It was clear that this prototype had not been developed for Mercedes, but for Auto-Union.However, Auto-Union did not want to hear about a four-stroke engine, arguing that the two-stroke engine was DKW's hallmark. The fact that Auto-Union did not give way led to results so miserable that the company was almost certain to sink into oblivion. The sales of F 102 were catastrophic, although the German economy was a dream at the time of the "economic miracle", the period of growth that followed the Second World War. Volkswagen AG also took advantage of this unexpected situation and absorbed Auto-Union on January 1, 1965. Radical changes were undertaken in order to save Auto-Union, meanwhile heavily indebted. Thus, the Ingolstadt factory began producing, from May 1965, up to 500 VW Beetles per day, also because the production capacity in Wolfsburg was too low and Ingolstadt would not collapse under the work.Many Auto-Union employees were let go after Volkswagen took over. The engineer Ludwig Kraus, was not part of the lot and was able, in his new role as technical director, to work on the development of the model known by its project name, the F 103. Developed in upstream, the "medium pressure engine", according to the principle of four strokes, was implanted in the old F 102, knowing that 15 prototypes of this model were completed in the spring of 1965 and were named F 103. The medium-pressure engine had a higher compression than a conventional petrol engine, but lower than a diesel, and required a lead-containing fuel. The designation of this engine comes from its very high average operating pressure for the time. Thus, the model equipped with the four-stroke engine had to be baptized differently, since neither DKW, for its attachment to the two-stroke engine, nor Auto-Union was taken into account for Heinrich Nordhoff, then head of Volkswagen. By replacing DKW with Audi, echoing the name that belonged to Auto-Union and which, during the years preceding the war, had been synonymous with technical progress. Indeed, the four independent brands Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer had at the time been united under the name of Auto-Union, four names symbolized by the logo of the four intertwined rings. The first new Audi was produced on August 13, 1965, at the right time for IAA Frankfurt, which started in September. At Auto Union, the festivities were underway. The model was promoted in these terms:The Audi is the only vehicle to have a medium pressure engine. It is unusual, because it enjoys a higher compression than any other comparable four-stroke model. Unusual also because of its parents. Developed by Mercedes-Benz. Built by Auto-Union.Since it was impossible to agree on a name for the Audi F 103 project, this first model was simply called Audi, without further designation. Internally, however, it was called Audi 72, given the number of horses. It was a front-wheel-drive sedan equipped with a four-stroke, four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1.7 litres. It served as a model for the Audi 60 and Super 90, which were a great success. Other models followed with engines that could develop up to 90 hp, not to mention a estate variant as well..
