"Bee Vase" focuses on nature, materials, and texture by exploring the use of insect by-products to create beautiful vessels. Using propolis, a biodegradable resin that bees collect from trees and use as a sealant in their hive, the designer crafts elegant vases with properties similar to smooth glass by implementing traditional glass-blowing and engraving techniques. Each references patterns found in nature, but Huissoud chooses to use a black variant of propolis that possesses a much lower melting point than glass, so is therefore easier to manipulate. A single beehive produces only 100 grams of propolis per year, meaning these unique vases are few and far between.
