Mark Twain remarked “architects cannot teach nature anything.” Nature, however, continually challenges the ingenuity of man to collaborate in the creation of beauty. The two brothers of Hills Bros. Coffee fame captured this ethos in the 1920s with their sprawling estate straddling the California-Nevada state line on Lake Tahoe’s north shore. Remaining true to that vision, the main residence was rebuilt in 2001, incorporating many of the original handcrafted wood planks and beams. The modernized residence—set on over eight acres and spanning some 9,750 square feet—provides elegant accommodations with view-filled main rooms, a 16-seat theater, and seven bedrooms highlighted by a magnificent two-bedroom master suite. A full array of luxury escapes, including a gym and separate steam, yoga, and massage rooms, attend. Lakeside life is further enhanced by a caretaker’s house, 618 feet of sandy beach, a beach cabana, a private pier, four boat slips, and three buoys.
