* This is a beautifully preserved female tortoise fossil of _Stylemys nebracensis_. It slowly plodded over the temperate area of South Dakota about 30 million years ago in an area known as the White River Badlands of South Dakota. Today the badlands are a series of highly eroded hills and gullies of light colored sedimentary layers. _Stylemys_ was the first species of fossil tortoise to be discovered and described in North America.
* Dimensions: 8.25 inches, 21 cm (length) x 6.25 inches, 15.5 cm (width) x 4 inches, 10 cm (height), weight = 9 lb. or 4095 grams. Minimal restoration - less than five percent. It also has a fossilized leg bone (Femur).
* Name: _Stylemys nebrascensis_
Geologic Age: Oligocene (30-35 Million Years Old)
Locale: Brule Formation, White River Badlands Group, South Dakota
