Magnificent and great Habsburg imperial arms in Trani marble, entirely crafted and carved by hand, depicting a two-headed eagle with open wings (symbology borrowed and bonding with the coat of arms and the flag of the Holy Roman Empire). It comes from the Austrian area, it was placed on the top of a large indoor fireplace flue of an important private residence. Period: late 19th centuryExceptional and unique workmanship, remarkable care and precision of detail; phenomenal care of the anatomy of the animal, of claws, feathers etc.The double-headed eagle was adopted as imperial coat of arms for the first time by the Roman Emperor Constantine I, called the Great, and lasted as a coat of arms in the Eastern Roman Empire until the last dynasty of Byzantine emperors. Today, the Greek Orthodox Church uses the double-headed eagle as inheritance of the Byzantines. The same coat of arms was later used by the Habsburgs, emperors of Austria and kings of Hungary, and by Romanov, Tsar of all Russia. The object was made of very precious Trani marble, of Italian origin; it still has an enviable patina and veining. This lot is one of a kind, of rare beauty.
