Hand-Woven Rug of Sardinian Will Designed by Patricia Urquiola

US$6,694.76

Patricia Urquiola was inspired by historic Sardinian designs, folklore and countryside which influenced the design of this carpet. The carpet was handmade in a small workshop which has been managed by the same lady for more than 60 years. Only Sardinian wool was used and the final colour fixing, using vinegar, was chosen by Patricia Urquiola. Classical Sardinian carpets – “artigianato tessile Sardo” – like this one, are woven on horizontal looms, and “pibiones” describes a technique used in the central and eastern areas of the island where rows of high relief tight loops lie on a same colour or contrasting shade background. The loops are prominent and do indeed look like neat rows of “grapes” and give the carpet its' amazing texture and three dimensions. In 1986 two Sardinian architects, Bimbia Fresu and Giovanni Battista Erby, invited celebrated designers to design carpets that were to be made by the women weavers of Sardinia using traditional flat weaving techniques, the initiative was aimed at giving new impetus to the local textile industry.
