Born in 1974, Roberto Bernardi is an Italian photorealistic painter. He started painting at a very young age. He dedicated his studies to the learning of pictorial techniques which would have a significant influence on his artistic formation. When he completed his leaving school examinations in 1993, Bernardi moved to Rome and worked as a restorer in the church of San Francesco a Ripa. Bernardni’s initial artistic inclination was towards landscapes and portraits but it was his experimentation and foray into the hyperrealistic technique which comes to define his style. Bernardi’s artworks appear extremely realistic to the extent of a “trompe l’oeil”, (“deceive the eye” in French). The elements of his compositions are photographed through a coloured filter, which adds to the later hyperrealistic results. This image is then transformed to painting, using traditional oil-on-canvas techniques. Bernardi’s still life follows the rules of classic compositions with emphasis on the light, its reflections and all types of transparencies those compositions may present. Bernardi had his first solo exhibitions in 1994, at the age of twenty, which was a big success. Since then his works have been included in numerous group and solo exhibitions, including the New Britain Museum of American Art, the Herbert G. Johnson Museum of Art, the National Museum of Fine Arts, Malta, Birmingham, among others. His work has appeared in the New York Sun, Art News, Art in America, Vogue Korea, the Spectator and Modern Painters. Bernardi’s stunningly realistic paintings have made him a highly sought after artist for private and public collections alike. In 2010, Bernardi was commissioned by ENI, Italy’s renowned multinational oil and gas company to create a Hyperrealistic painting for their prestigious art collection.
