Once perceived as a pale imitation of Scotch, the past ten years have seen Japanese whisky assume its rightful place as one of the world’s great spirits, renowned for both quality and complexity, with many international awards to prove the point. Yamazaki is Japan’s oldest working whisky distillery, having been established in 1923, and its 16 varied stills provide owner Suntory with a wide variety of single malt styles. Hanyu and Karuizawa have the status of ‘lost’ distilleries, making their spirit extremely precious. The whisky produced in both has gained cult status among consumers and collectors for its old-fashioned Scottish-style quality and outstanding character.
