TASTING NOTES
Appearance: copper orange.
Nose: fine, racy. Its floral depth: pink, lilac, cornflower, tuberose, iris, evolves on leather and milk chocolate. Karuizawa spices that are derived from a high-powered distillate. There cumin, cloves, nutmeg and cardamom. Malted barley is there. He played on the baked apple and citrus.
Palate: dense, original. It oscillates between the coated tannins oak, spices and salted butter caramel. Vanilla, coconut and heady flowers (geranium, lily) exacerbate the mid-palate. Fine, it operates on the fresh tobacco, nuts and other flowers (violet, jasmine).
Overall: long, heady. A note highlights soot aging in bourbon casks. Orris concrete, marmalade, hazelnut, quince jelly, honey lavender, saffron and ripe apples precede a palate heady and fresh at once. Once empty, the glass still testifies to the presence of Karuizawa.

THE BRAND
The Karuizawa distillery was built in 1955 in the town of the same name, in the prefecture of Nagano surrounded by the Japanese Alps. Japanese whisky generally has a very good reputation, but Karuizawa is especially sought after and appreciated by connoisseurs; it has accumulated an impressive number of medals in competitions. Just like Macallan, it is a whisky that owes much of its character to the type of barley that is used: (‘Golden Promise’) and to ageing in sherry casks. Production stopped in 2000 and bottles are becoming increasingly rare.
