Matisse a great artist and a well known figure of a modern art.

Henri Matisse was a French artist, known for his use of color and his fluid and original draughtsman ship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Picasso and Marcel Duchamp, as one of the three artists who helped to define the revolutionary developments in the plastic arts in the opening decades of the 20th century. The Painter had expressive language of color and drawing, displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century, won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art.

The artist first solo exhibition was at Ambroise Vollard's gallery in 1904, without much success. The paintings of this period are characterized by flat shapes and controlled lines, with expression dominant over detail which contributed to modern art. The paintings expressed emotion with wild, often dissonant colors, without regard for the subject's natural colors. The French artist showed Open Window and Woman with the Hat at the Salon.
