LATE 19TH CENTURY OAK SIDEBOARD

A quite magnificent, late 19th century, oak sideboard, the base section incorporating three serving slides with inset marble centres, the doors carved in high relief with foliage and fruits. The end cupboards fitted with drawers and sliding trays, the top of the base section intricately inlaid with parquetry octagons of contrasting cuts of oak and boxwood. The upper section with original mirror plate, the shelves supported on fabulous Gryffons. The whole of quite exceptional quality.

Sideboards are an item of furniture traditionally used in the dining room for serving food, for displaying serving dishes such as silver, and for storage. It usually consists of a set of cabinets, or cupboards, and one or more drawers, all topped by a flat display surface for conveniently holding food, serving dishes, and even lighting devices. The overall height of the tops of most sideboards is approximately waist level.
