Astronaut Edwin E. Aldrin, lunar module pilot, is photographed as he egresses the lunar module during the Apollo 11 extravehicular activity on the lunar surface. This picture was taken by astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, a commander, with a 70 mm lunar surface camera.

**The artist: Neil Armstrong**

Born on 5th August 1930 in Wapakoneta, Ohio, Neil Alden Armstrong was an astronaut, a test pilot, United States Navy pilot and an American professor. His first flight in space on board Gemini 8 took place in 1966, a flight for which his role was command pilot. During this mission, he performed the first docking in space between two vehicles with the pilot Dave Scott. Armstrong’s second space flight was as commander of Apollo 11’s famous mission on 20th July 1969. During this mission, he and Edwin E. Aldrin landed on the surface of the moon in the lunar model Apollo and explored the lunar surface for two and a half hours (period when they covered approximately 250 m). Neil was the first person to step onto the moon on 21st July 1969 at 2h56 min 15s CUT. At this time he declared: 'That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind'. Armstrong received the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
