The origins of the Porsche 930 can be traced back to the late 1960s when Porsche began to experiment with turbocharging for their race cars. By 1972 they had developed a turbocharged version of the 911 for homologation purposes and this became the basis of the Porsche 930, which was generally known to the public as the 911 Turbo. The engine for this car was developed by Ernst Fuhrmann who adapted the turbocharging technology originally used in the 917 race cars to produce a 3 litre, 6 cylinder unit that developed almost 260 b.h.p. Harnessing this power was a stronger gearbox, redesigned suspension system, larger brakes and wider rear wheels. Coupled with a new "whale tail" rear spoiler, which helped cool the engine and provide additional downforce, the new 930 was a potent yet highly tractable sports car.
