Neon advertisements produce an important rhythmic element in this street view. In a very direct way, they refer to the dark and light rectangles and lines I introduce in my paintings in order to give the images a sense of order and balance. I tried to catch the atmosphere and dim light in the streets near the harbour front in Sheung Wan. Not able to read the Chinese characters, the neon advertisements with their red letters form an extra playful element. Although more profound, the human presence on the street level in this painting is less important than the architectural order.
