The bronze piece "Allonge" is about human scale and ambition. Its title comes comes from classical ballet, referring to the technical position in which the dancer extends the arm in such a way that the limb appears to be longer-and more attenuated-than it really is. "I love the aspirational metaphor, of reaching beyond what is physically possible," says Kurtz. The piece is both figurative and abstract and so delicate that its thin bronze limbs vibrate at times, registering any movement around it. "I chose bronze for this piece because of its material history," says the artist. "The suggested permanence of bronze underscores the isolation of the dancers effort-taking a physical movement held out in space, however futile, and fossilizing it in time."
