A Magnificent Queen Anne Silver Cup & Cover, London 1704
This is a wonderful and rare example of a Queen Anne cup & cover made by William Denny in London in 1704.

This piece is made using Britannia Standard Silver (95.84%) as opposed to Sterling Silver (92.50%) as this was compulsory between 1697-1720. It was introduced originally as part of William III's great recoinage scheme which attempted to limit the clipping and melting of silver coinage. A higher standard for wrought plate meant that sterling silver coins could not easily be used as a source of raw material because additional fine silver, which was in short supply at the time, would have to be added to bring the purity of the alloy up to the higher standard.

Height: 9.75inches (25cm)
Width including handles: 11.5inches (29.2cm)
