"Wilson was a drug dealer who warned me, when I first met him a year before photographing this, not to take his picture. The day this was taken, he had asked me to photograph him so he could send it to his father. In this building, heroin and cocaine was sold at any hour of any day."

**The artist: Joseph Rodriguez**

Joseph Rodriguez, the acclaimed documentary photographer from New York is known for his intimate and accurate portrayal of people who live on the edge of society. A passion for photography saved Rodriguez from a life of theft and drug dealing. His award-winning photos are published regularly in well-known newspapers and magazines such as _The New York Times_, _Der Spiegel,_ and _National Geographic_. In 2013, Rodriguez's work was shown in a major retrospective in Germany by Hardhitta Gallery. Recently, his works were part of the exhibition Our America: The Latino Presence in American Art at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington.
