### **A large blue dish**

**1670-1700AD, Japan**

**Diameter: 53.5 cm, 21.07 inches, Height: 9 cm, 3.54 inches**

The large charger sits on a flat recessing rim, decorated in underglaze blue with blossoming peonies and chrysanthemums near a fence at the centre, encircled by a continuous spiky lotus scroll on the broad rim. The reverse is blank with seven spur-marks on the base within the footring.

Although the flowering plants are still reminiscent of those on Chinese kraak porcelain, the style of painting, the composition, and in particular the border motif are characteristic of the later 17th -century production when the early styles and motifs had been combined into new patterns.
