A Naive Oil on Canvas 'A Prospect of Pennsylvania' Circa 1880 U.S.A.

US$3,882.96

This striking naive oil painting shows a small rural community in Pennsylvania towards the end of the 19th century possibly Amish / Mennonite. As an American landscape on original canvas it is a rare survivor of this particular genre of picture. One cannot help thinking that its purpose was to record the newly finished waterworks on which swim three swans. Evidently it is summer time the trees are in leaf, flowers are growing around the cabin and flowering shrubs spring up amongst the residue logs in the foreground. In sympathy with many of these early naive pictures it is not signed by the artist, though it is exhibited in a fabulous 19th century Burr-Yew frame. Place of Origin : Pennsylvania, U.S.A. Period : Late 19th Century Medium : Oil on canvas
