A pair of George II silver Candlesticks, London 1751
Height: 26 1/2 cm
Weight: 1,480 g (48 oz)

The form and decoration of these candlesticks is most unusual for the period and shows a strong French influence. The silversmith has been entirely successful in his use of lively swirling flutes and a delicate band of guilloche around the base.
Provenance: Neville Hamwee, Christie’s, London, June 27, 1973, lot 12
Christie’s, New York, April 19, 1990, lot 290
On circular domed bases cast and chased with a band of ovolo enclosing paterae within reeded bands, rising to swirling domes and knopped tapering stems with similar paterae and panels of stylised shells and husks on matted ground, with shells at the shoulders, the campana shaped sockets chased with bands of vertical palmettes and ovolo, the bases engraved with a crest within foliate scroll asymmetrical cartouches.
