Very beautiful heavy bronze bell-shaped mortar from 1669 with matching pestle. It has ans inscription “Amor Vincit Omnia 1669” (love conquers all), and also very nice and sharp shown frisians/ornaments of standing finials with a pearl edge (top) and palmettes on a pearl edge (bottom). The mortar still looks beautiful and has a very nice patina. It was supposedly cast by Gerrit Schimmel. These clock caster was born in Ochtrup (Westphalia), in 1659 he married with a niece of the famous Deventer clock caster Henrick ter Horst where he worked as a servant. Gerrit Schimmel was active in Deventer from 1660 until his death in 1707. In 1666, after the death of Henrick ter Horst, he took over his work and in 1680 the foundry and inventory became his property. Throughout his career Gerrit Schimmel kept using the models of the Frisians that Henrick ter Horst also used for his clocks and mortars. The frisians/ornaments of finials with a pearl border and palmettes on pearl edge are well-known images that were used also by Henrick ter Horst. For example, see image 24 and 25 for a similar pearl edge and palmettes on a mortar by Henrick ter Horst in the book ‘Die Morsersammlung, Ernst Genz’.
