DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century Chinese export solid silver cased tea cup and saucer, the cup stunningly embossed and chased in relief with a dragon emerging from clouds on a finely tooled ground, the handle simulating wooden branches, the saucers engraved with a dragon. The set features very high craftsmanship and reveals a perfect condition, it comes in the original fitted wooden box lined in blue silk and applied with brass handle. Each piece is Hallmarked Chinese Export silver (90 for 900+ standard), Makers mark "TC" (Tuck Chang & Company, 67 Broadway rd, Shanghai, active 1870-1920)

Probably one of the best known retail silversmiths of the latter half of the 19th century in Shanghai - often referred to as being the 'Wang Hing' of Shanghai. Like Wang Hing in Canton and Hong Kong, Tuck Chang sold high quality jewelery, silver wares, jade and ivory. While having its own working relationships with Shanghai-based artisan silversmiths helped create a style other than that of Canton and Hong Kong. The large international resident population ensured a brisk trade in trophy silver items. (please see A. Von Ferscht, Chinese Export Silver 1785-1940, 4th edition 2015, page 763).
