### DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century Indian solid silver zoomorphic silver lidded jug, of very unusual shape which is partially based on the classical Askos jug, native to ancient Greece. Standing on four cast and chased bird feet, the neck, body and handle are deeply chased with scrolling flower and leaf motifs inspired by the flowers and leaves of the coriander plant. Two snakes split from the handle to surround and connect to the neck, the hinged lid has been mounted with two tigers. The shape and design is unique, but in keeping with the purpose of the vessel, the holding and pouring of water or wine.

It was common practice for British silversmiths in the nineteenth century to take inspiration from ancient pieces discovered on grand tours which were brought brought back, these ancient objects were copied in silver and other precious materials and used make silver jugs and decorative ornaments for the Victorian dining tables and this example was made for possibly the same purpose.
The silver is not hallmarked as always the case for Kashmiri silver, acid tested shows as 800+ silver standard, it dates to the 1870's.
