GEORGE II PERIOD WING CHAIR
US$23,268.10 A fine George II period mahogany framed wing chair. Reference for a similar pair of carved mahogany library armchairs, with almost identical carving, but with trailing bell flowers and pad feet which may have formed part of a set of armchairs and side chairs from the collection of the 1st Earl of Mornington at Dangan, Co Meath. In the manner of Giles Grendey.RRc. 1750An 18th or 19th Century Wing chair is an easy chair or club chair with "wings" mounted to the back of the chair, typically, but not always, stretching down to the arm rest. The purpose of the "wings" was to enclose the head or torso areas of the body in order to provide comfortable protection from drafts, and to trap the heat from an open fireplace in the area where the person would be sitting. Hence, in historic times these are often used near a fireplace. Many of the oldest wing chair examples have an exposed frame with padded cushions at the seat, arm rests, back and sometimes wings.Height44.00 inch(111.8 cm)Width33.00 inch(83.8 cm)Depth25.00 inch(63.5 cm)Ref No. 2541
