Antique Victorian Burr Walnut & Inlaid Bookcase c.1880
US$3,012.64 This is an antique Victorian English burr walnut and inlaid bookcase circa 1880. It has been crafted from the most beautiful burr walnut, and has elegant inlaid marquetry satinwood decorations. It has two glazed doors on top, for displaying your favourite books or ornaments, with two useful drawers in the frieze and two pannelled doors below which open to reveal a spacious cupboard. The bookcase features in addition elegant hand carved border around the mid and top section. The bookcase has original brass handles and a key. It is a beautiful piece which would look beautiful in any home office or library. Dimensions in cm: Height 209 x Width 119 x Depth 39 Dimensions in inches: Height 6 feet, 10 inches x Width 3 feet, 11 inches x Depth 1 foot, 3 inches Burr Walnut refers to the swirling figure present in nearly all walnut when cut and polished, and especially in the wood taken from the base of the tree where it joins the roots. However the true burr is a rare growth on the tree where hundreds of tiny branches have started to grow. Burr walnut produce some of the most complex and beautiful figuring you can find. Marquetry is decorative artistry where pieces of material (such as wood, mother of pearl, pewter, brass silver or shell) of different colours are inserted into surface wood veneer to form intricate patterns such as scrolls or flowers. The technique of veneered marquetry had its inspiration in 16th century Florence. Marquetry elaborated upon Florentine techniques of inlaying solid marble slabs with designs formed of fitted marbles, jaspers and semi-precious stones.
