Lee U-Fan : An artist assigning art in a level of pure expression in his art work.
Lee U-Fan is a KOREAN born JAPANESE studied art in early childhood specializing art work such as minimalist painter and sculptor and leader of the Japanese material school Monoha in the late 1960’s. Lee in his art works attained near-legendary status in Asia and enjoys a high degree of recognition in Europe.
His art in sculptural series Relatum is equally minimal: each art work is comprised of one or more light-colored round stones and dark, rectangular iron plates.
In 1991 Lee U-fan began his art work in series of Correspondence paintings, which consist of just one or two grey-blue brushstrokes, made of a mixture of oil and crushed stone pigment, applied onto a large white surface. The art implicate dialectical relationship between the brushstroke and the canvas is mimicked in the relationship between the stone and the iron plate. In his art work U-fan's installations space is at the same time untouched and engaged, at the confines between doing and non-doing. The relationship between painted / unpainted and occupied / empty space lies at the heart of Lee U-fan's practice.
