Feldschuh Gallery - Irving Penn, Still Life with Watermelon, 1947

US$75,000.00

"I feed on art more than I ever do on photographs," said Irving Penn (1917-2009). This 1947 still life is a testament to the photographer's art historical nourishment. The postprandial scene, colorful and sensual with a hint of decay, positions a juicy pink watermelon wedge at its center, and from this pure plane descends the detritus of a meal-napkin, a mushroom cap, melon seeds, cherry stems, the heel of a baguette-while a bowl of ripe fruit forms a triangle above it.
