Swiss-born Werner Bischof (1916-1954) began his career as a painter before moving on to photography. Having perfected a subtle, graphic use of light and shadow on inanimate objects, he soon turned his lens on humanity. Bischof captured this image while on assignment for_Life_ magazine in India, where he primarily photographed the famine in Bihar but also spent time in the country's southern region. He encountered this boy in repose at a Kathakali dancing school.
