A witness of his time, Jean-Philippe Carré-Mattei travels the world with his digital camera, without limiting himself only to the borders. The photographer captures images of his routes through landscapes and transitional zones that the French anthropologist Marc Augé would describe as non-places. These are the anonymous sites that emerged with the advent of modernity and that are home to an increasing number of individuals every day. They are both the installations required for the accelerated circulation of people, such as motorways and means of transport, but also major hotel chains with their interchangeable rooms. Jean-Philippe Carré-Mattei invites the spectator to see the world from new perspectives with these billboards advertising motels installed along the endless stretches of American roads. Both day and night, from Missouri to California, the bright installations that he photographs are transformed into graphic and visual elements.

**The artist: Jean-Philippe Carré-Mattei**

Born in 1966 in Paris, Jean-Philippe Carré-Mattei is passionate about images. After defending a thesis on the technical anthropology of photography at the Sorbonne, this specialist has been off the lecture hall benches for several years now, teaching in turn and passing on his knowledge in prestigious Parisian institutions. Attracted by travel photography, he has recorded his many journeys from Iceland to the deserts of the Emirates, via the Trans-Siberian, and Chinese megalopolises. He documents the extremities of the world, where his familiar environment disappears in favour of new realities. While he focuses on architecture and landscape, his photographic approach is extremely meticulous when he is not travelling, accentuating geometric aspects that are affirmed in the framing and surreal settings. The artist holds regular exhibitions in France and abroad with his photography collective.
