During a recent trip to China, notably in the south of Guilin, Daniel Metz became enamoured with the region’s landscapes, comprising thousands of small mountains in the form of very jagged peaks – the karstic reliefs characteristic of Guangxi, which is nonetheless an industrial and highly urbanised area. Daniel Metz works with photographs like a painter constructing a painting, after a period of analysis, studying the composition and chromatic choices. Based on his background as a theorist of colour, the subject of many publications, he makes it a point of honour to showcase this aspect as an essential element of imagery. In his works, the juxtaposition and contrast of colours effectively enable the forms to be revealed and accentuate the depth of the landscape. These characteristics confer a very graphic and pared-down dimension to his photographs, in a similar manner to Japanese engravings.
