After progressing various occupations Michael Ewart eventually found his niche in 1972 and started teaching. Ewart worked in this profession for 30 years, but continued a lifelong passion for art by painting whenever the time allowed. Now retired from teaching, he has embarked on a second career as a professional artist. Michael Ewart has had no formal art training - but Ewart's studies of past masters, especially 20th century English painters, is evident in the way he has developed as a contemporary artist. He has taken inspiration from artists such as Sickert, Coldstream and Pasmore who have influenced the way in which he has developed. In the last few years Michael Ewart has developed a very distinctive art style and palette. His use of colour creates an almost nostalgic, romantic feeling throughout his work. Michael Ewart paints exclusively in oils. Ewart feels the medium allows him to explore the feel of the subject. Typical subjects for Ewart are people set against a backdrop of everyday places such as railway stations, cafes, libraries and British Art Galleries. More recently Ewart has started to paint Marine paintings.
