Born in Gaomi, Shandong Province, China, Fan graduated from one of China’s best colleges of fine arts, the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing where she resides now. Fan is known for sculpting with machinery such as saw blades, engine motors and piping to convey a more primal, provocative robot humanoid. Her series of cyborgs are a metaphor for the rapidly growing technological innovations of the human race. Through her art, Fan emanates a feminist note through their strong warrior-like poses in improbable and surrealist situations. Fan’s sculpture expresses a refreshing portrayal of the contemporary Chinese woman. Fan uses her art as means to recognize and partake in the increasing influence of female and sexual empowerment in the contemporary Chinese society. Fan, herself is feminine yet exudes an incredible strength and energy which she illustrates in her works. This duality is furthermore reflected in her work when using materials such as steel with its coldness in contrast to the warmth exuded by the brightness of gold. Fan expresses herself through the women in her works as emotional outlets, where these figures can do the things that she is unable to, serving as a substitute for the projection of her inner spirit in an alternate reality. The futuristic sculptures of Fan have been exhibited around the world from Europe to America and Asia.
