Dimensions (cm): 61 x 35.5 x 26
Year: 1830
A Regency mahogany and brass bound writing slope of unusually large proportions, the top and front with scroll-edge brass vacant plaques, the sides with military-style flush brass handles with conforming scrolled sides, the interior with a gilt tooled leather-lined writing surface below inkpots, two lidded compartments and a pen tray, the sides with integral brass supports which rest on ratchets cleverly built in. One side with a drawer, inscribed 'Turners patent'.
This imposing Writing Slope would have been made for a high-ranking military officer or naval captain.
Whether used on land or at sea it was imperative for officers to be able to communicate quickly and regularly with their superiors in England.
Nelson, for example, was a prolific letter-writer, sending off missive after missive even as the British fleet waited for the wind to favour them off Trafalgar in October 1805\\. He would have used a writing slope such as this upon which to write his letters.
