A Victorian oak country house posting box, made by the firm of John Batson of Brewer Street, London.
The box of pillar form, with hexagonal and lobed domed cover, the aperture with a brass panel inscribed 'Letters', the hinged door with brass framed panel with a printed list of posting costs. The door opening to reveal the original dark blue leather-lined interior, the drawer below with a registration diamond for 7th May 1872.
The design for this posting box was registered in 1872 by John Batson. It is illustrated as Plate 210 on Page 199 of Treen and other Wooden Bygones by Edward H. Pinto, published by Bell & Hyman in 1969.

An identical Country House Posting Box was entered for sale in Bonhams Gentleman Library Sale in January 2010 with an estimate of £12,000 - £18,000.
