These barbers chairs have a swivel action and tilt backwards, as opposed to later chairs which have oil hydraulics which go up and down.

In 1900 Ernest Koken, a German immigrant, patented a 'joystick' side lever which allowed a barber to control all the mechanical functions. Our barbers' chairs are an excellent example of this patent, of which there are few survivors, and they have been restored to their former glory.
