A late Victorian, Scottish cut glass and silver mounted clock inkpot of unusually large size, the hinged cover inset with an 8-day timepiece with Roman numerals and subsidiary seconds dial, signed Hamilton & Inches, the heavy square cut glass base is of spirally lobed form, the silver hallmarked is for Edinburgh 1898, mark of H&I.
Hamilton & Inches are an Edinburgh manufacturer and retailer of silver and jewellery. Set up in 1866 they have since their inception produced a wide range of high quality objects. Our inkpot is a rare example of Victorian practicality, combining the need to tell the time with the Victorian love of letter-writing.
