Harris & Sheldon of 70 Wood Street, London, E.C.2, and Stafford Street, Birmingham were shop fitters and were established in Birmingham around 1870. They did not just provide a local service, but extended over the country.

This cabinet was made to display big objects like sculptures and vases. The podium made of ebonised oak allows the imposing piece to be elevated from the ground and thus more admirable by clients of friends of the collector. The four sides and top glass allows the light to enter the cabinet through all angles and highlight the content. The structure of the cabinet is oak, Harris & Sheldon's material of predilection, mounted with a brass panel to give a more dramatic look. No wood is visible from the outside. The structure allows the mounting of shelving inside the cabinet.
