A Staunton Chess Set, the black set ebony, the white set boxwood, housed in a mahogany box labelled 'British Chess Company's Staunton Popular Chessmen, no. 4'.

The Staunton Chess Set is composed of a particular type of chess pieces: According to the rules of Chess, this style is to be used in competitions. And our set, with the 4" King is also the required size for competition use. Nathaniel Cook is credited with the design and the set is named ater Howard Staunton. This style of set was first made available by Jaques of London in 1849 and they quickly became the standard. They have been used around the world since. The sets were turned on a lathe, the non-circular details then added by hand; the knights were made in two parts which were stuck together with adhesive. Our Chess Set is in perfect original condition.
