One of the most influential creative minds of our time, Ai Weiwei is a Chinese artist and a social activist whose work includes fine arts, photography, architecture, and social criticism. As a political activist, he has been highly and openly critical of the Chinese government's stance on democracy and human rights. This riff on the common souvenir spoon makes playful use of Weiwei's work Study of Perspective, a series of images that's featured in MoMA's collection. The photographs show the artist lifting his middle finger to iconic manmade landmarks around the world. It's an initially humorous act that signifies the power of the artist's rejection of authority. The teaspoons feature Tiananmen Square, the Eiffel Tower and the White House.
