An early 20th century Crocodile skin jewellery box formed as a small suitcase with brass fittings, the 15-lugged hinge opening to reveal one long compartmentalized section and two fold-out sections, with narrow ring-holders, the lock stamped 'Bramah, London'.
Originally a cabinet maker, Joseph Bramah (1748 - 1814) patented a lock in 1784 which, due to its complex design, remaining unpicked for more than 50 years. The firm continued as makers of high quality locks throughout the Victorian era and 20th century. With any box, the higher the number of lugs (the sections which make up the hinge) the better quality the box; this 15-lugged hinge is symptomatic of the overall quality of the box.
